About one year ago, I met Houston sisters Katie McClure and Erin McClure Breen at an event I was co-hosting at Biscuit Home. They were incredibly stylish in that effortlessly cool, laid back way. Perhaps it was because they were wearing a caftan and caftans are known for exuding a certain mix of chic and comfort, like non other. After speaking for a bit, I learned that they were actually wearing their own line, Mirth, that was still in the pre-launch phase, after returning from an inspirational trip to India.
Caftans are certainly not a new concept, but they have made a major comeback in the last few years. What’s different about the Mirth caftan is the story behind it, the people who make it and the quality + casual appeal of it. The sister want their caftans to be your companion on everything including “long voyaging and slow living.”
While on an elephant ride in the desert, after a fruitful day touring the city, the sisters conceptualize the idea for the travel-friendly clothing line, made right there in India. And Mirth Caftans was born!
“India’s thrilling mess of color, tastes and stunning landscapes, and the rich experiences with the people you meet, have the ability to change you,” McClure says.
The line specializes in neutral colors and simple prints that make them the quintessential travel companion. Each caftan comes in a Potli, a reusable cloth pouch, perfect for the essentials when heading to the pool (or beach).
It was always a priority of the founding sisters that their caftans be ethically made, including fare wages, hours, and safe and pleasant working conditions. Following the trend of many new start-ups, Mirth donates a percent of profits to a charity in the village where many of their partners are located. When you purchase a caftan you can feel good knowing you helped provide a day of school to a child who otherwise might not be able to receive an education.
