When the NEAT Method reached out to me about organizing the boys’ closets, I was ecstatic, to say the least! The boys are at an age where they are growing so quickly, and everything from their clothes to their toys are constantly being outgrown and replaced with new items. Of course, it’s hard to stay on top of discarding old items which means that their toy closet and clothing closet were in desperate need of an overhaul.
In case you’re not familiar with the NEAT Method, it’s a luxury home organizing company with locations across the country. They start with an in-home consultation followed by organizing and categorizing the items in the area you are focusing on, measuring and planning out the space, and then purchasing the organization products you need and installing them. My Houston rep Annie Duckworth was a dream to work with and I could not be more excited with out the project turned out! Read on below for more details about how she tackled the boys’ closets and images of the revamped space!
Knox’s Closet / Toy Closet
Knox’s closet was by far the biggest overhaul! It was a huge space that was completely wasted with a single hanging bar and shelf on each side of the closet. We added double hanging shelves to the left side for clothes as he grows and turned the right side of the closet into toy storage. We don’t have a playroom in our house so this was MAJOR! I love all the clear bins so the boys can see what they have and it’s easier for clean up since everyone knows where things belong.
We had originally designated a separate closet for the boys’ toys, but as you can see in these pics, the NEAT Method helped me consolidate both Knox’s clothing and their toys into one closet space, which opened up a whole closet for other things!
Andrew’s Closet
As you can see, Andrew’s closet is much smaller than Knox’s. His isn’t a walk-in, it has sliding doors to open either side. Since most the toys are being stored in Knox’s closet, Andrew’s is mostly just his clothes, accessories, bags, and gear. We do bedtime stories in his glider so we keep a good amount of books in here, as well.
Tips and Tricks:
Annie started by organizing all clothing, accessories, and toys by category which helped us evaluate what we didn’t need to keep (lots of Goodwill runs were made!). Once we purged the closet, she measured out the space and planned exactly what we need to purchase from The Container Store. We broke everything down into super specific categories – like “action figures” and “Lincoln Logs” – to make sure that it’s easy for the boys to keep toys in the right place. We used clear bins since Andrew can’t read – he can see what’s inside. My friend Meg Grant labeled all of the drawers and bins with her beautiful calligraphy so no matter who is helping with clean up, it is clear where everything goes.
I’m of course swooning over this whole project, but I think the boys are actually really excited too! They can find and access their toys so easily and know exactly where to return things when they are done playing — a win win for everyone! Knox was so cute when he walked in to see his closet. He literally laid on the floor in awe!
