TIBI BOYFRIEND BLAZER_7

This week will mark the first true week of Houston attempting to get back to life after Harvey, our new normal.  Schools are opening their doors (those that can), roads that have been under water are expected to re-open and everyone is officially back at work (if they weren’t already last week).

Today we are talking about how we can move forward, without moving on…

While some parts of Houston (our neighborhood, for example) may look like business as usual, Houstonians have certainly not already forgotten about Harvey and all our fellow neighbors, friends, church members, teachers, and strangers who are still suffering so much.  Now we are in the weird limbo of attempting to get back to some sort of ‘routine’ while adding a new responsibility to our weekly, if not daily agenda.  How do we continue to help those in need now that we also have to move on and face our ‘normal’ responsibilities.

This will look different for every individual.  Some may have money, but not time.  For those, I ask that you continue seeking ways to help financially.  Many of the local churches are doing so much for local families in need and don’t forget to check out our post on our favorite organizations to help with Harvey relief.

Others may have time, but are already spent on helping out any more financially.  Many neighborhoods on the west side of town are just now (or maybe not even yet) able to get into their flooded homes.  These families will need a tremendous amount of physical help ‘mucking’ their homes and cleaning out their personal items.  I encourage everyone to spend an evening after work or a Saturday getting out to physically help someone in need. It really puts everything into perspective to see the devastation first hand.  Local churches are a great place to start as they can direct you to their families in need.  If you don’t belong to one, Second Baptist is a wonderful place to start.  They are doing so much and have so many volunteer opportunities that need to be filled from working the food pantry to helping families directly.  I know some friends who have simply driven to one of the streets that flooded.  You will see working crews and you can simply drop in and offer your help.  Bonus points if you show up with coffee and donuts! ๐Ÿ˜‰  Additionally the American Red Cross is still in desperate need of volunteers.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Florida, Georgia and others parts of the Deep South — Alabama, Tennessee and the Carolinas, right now as Irma makes its way up the east coast.
